Why some payee names show in uppercase

Why some payee names show in uppercase

We’ve updated how payee names and payment references appear in the app. They’ll now show exactly as you enter them, instead of automatically switching to uppercase letters.

For example, if you enter John Smith and Dinner, you’ll now see them written that way instead of JOHN SMITH and DINNER.

This makes your payment details clearer and easier to read.

Where this change applies

You’ll see the updated formatting in places like:

  • Making a payment
  • Favourite payees
  • The favourite payee widget
  • Managing payees
  • Scheduled payments
  • Viewing your standing order payee list

Where this change doesn’t apply

Some details will still appear in uppercase letters. This includes:

  • Payment references in online banking
  • Existing payees where the name doesn’t match the nickname
  • Existing payment references
  • Bill payments (pre‑defined business payees)
  • Standing orders (only the payee name changes, not the reference)
  • International payees

Please note: We’re working on supporting mixed‑case formatting for

  • Payment references in online banking
  • Bill payment names (i.e. the pre-filled utilities list when you select to pay a business)

These updates are planned for the next few months.

How to update a payee name

You don’t need to update anything.
But if you prefer the name in mixed case, you can delete the payee and add it again the next time you make a payment. You’ll need their account details.

How to update a payment reference

You can change the reference the next time you make a payment to that payee.
If you want the new reference to save, you’ll need biometric approval switched on (such as Face ID or voice).
